Victorian poultry growers could save hundreds of thousands of dollars – just by changing a light bulb.
For years the humble 75- watt incandescent globe has played an invaluable role as controlled lighting has been widely used to stimulate bird growth and egg production.
But rising power bills and the ban on the sale of inefficient incandescent globes have growers looking for more efficient forms of lighting.
Latest globes to undergo trials are the Micro-Brite Cold Cathode Fluorescent Lamps (CCFL) which are said to require much less wattage, consume up to 80% less power and last 18 times longer.
President of the VFF Chicken Meat Group, Mike Shaw – who has successfully trialled the Micro-Brite globes – said the industry was looking for production efficiencies right across the board including alternatives to incandescent lighting and power useage.
Micro-Brites have been recently evaluated for qualities such as longevity, robustness and light output – along with other competitors – at Mike’s Moorooduc sheds.
“ An average broiler shed has at least 70 globes and with close to 500 VFF member sheds across the state that’s a lot of globes, a lot of power saved and reduced costs for our grower members,” he said.
“ It is something we are looking at closely – for growers this is a win win situation both for the environment and for their hip pocket,” he said.
CCFL is the same lighting technology as used in laptop computers.
An expanded range of Micro-Brite CCFL lamps from ANL Lighting has recently been introduced to Australia – ideal for many agribusiness applications including the chicken meat and egg industry, dairy and horticulture.
